About the Subreddit Atlas
The Subreddit Atlas maps more than 60,000 active Reddit communities as a single picture. Each dot is one subreddit. Communities sit near each other when they share an audience, meaning the same people post in both, so the map is built from roughly 200,000 measured overlaps rather than from topics anyone assigned by hand.
Neighbourhoods emerge on their own. Gaming communities cluster with gaming communities, finance with finance, and the interesting parts are the edges, where a subreddit sits between two worlds because its members belong to both. A dot's colour is its category, and its size reflects how active it is. You can switch that between posts per day, average upvotes, average comments, or number of connections.
The month selector rewinds the same map through every month back to 2008. Positions stay fixed while the dots grow, shrink and disappear, so you can watch a community rise or fade against neighbours that stayed put. Search any subreddit to jump straight to it, or select a dot to see its closest communities by audience overlap.
Common questions
- What is the Subreddit Atlas?
- It is a visual map of more than 60,000 Reddit communities, arranged so that subreddits sharing an audience appear close together. It is built from posting activity, not from topic labels.
- How are related subreddits determined?
- Two communities are connected when the same people post in both. The more of an audience they share, the closer together they sit on the map.
- How do I find subreddits related to one I already know?
- Search for it in the Atlas and select it. The map centres on that community and highlights the ones whose audiences overlap it most. Every subreddit also has a full stats page with its related communities listed.
